Millersville Office Center/ Word Movers Inc.

Each year thousands of entrepreneurs assume the risks involved in a start-up business. The following article describes how, from one such enterprise, two additional businesses emerged.

In 1980 a home based office moved to a business location in Millersville.  From too little space, the company found itself with several extra offices.  Having leased in an Executive Office Center in Washington, D.C. years earlier, the owner was familiar with the concept.  The spare offices were furnished, a receptionist hired and Millersville Office Center was born.  Before taking up direct mail services, tenant amenities included personalized telephone answering, pick-up and delivery of mail, custodial services, 24-hour, 7-day-a-week access to offices, as well as secretarial support and copy services.  Shortly after opening, Millersville Office Center added 7 additional furnished offices and an Office Manager responsible for overseeing tenant needs.  With several computers already in-house, it was decided to offer secretarial support services to the general public, as well as tenants.  This off-shoot business became known as Word Movers, Inc. In the early 80's, before it offered direct mail, most of the typing done by Word Movers consisted of letters, resumes, term papers, and transcriptions.  In order to keep the executive offices occupied and promote the secretarial services, marketing included yellow page ads, cold calls and membership in several chambers of commerce.

In 1990 Millersville Office Center moved to the I-97 Business Park.  Better access to Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington, as well as an increased number of parking spaces, were strong factors in the relocation.  A kitchen and conference room were added, as well as 18 additional furnished offices.  Fax machines, scanners, high-speed copiers and a sophisticated telephone system complete with voice mail were put in place as a part of tenant amenities.  DSL became available for fast, efficient Internet access and a security system was installed to ensure a safe environment.  Millersville Office Center provides their tenants with a professional work environment, complete with services, which free them from administrative and supervisory responsibilities.  This saving of time and cost involved in establishing, equipping, and maintaining office space enables the tenant to concentrate on building the success of his or her business.

The profile of Millersville Office Center tenants over the years has varied greatly.  If space is available, a lease for short-term - 3 month - has been written for persons needing temporary space while awaiting construction of a permanent office.  One business leased 4 - 7 offices for over 10 years (even moving with Millersville Office Center to its new location).  Many tenants are sales reps whose headquarters are in another city or state and rather than set-up an entire office, staffed with personnel to cover numerous task, an Executive Office is the perfect answer.

As more and more of Word Movers secretarial support customers began to purchase their own computers, it became clear that, in order to survive, this part of the business must change direction and begin to focus on a different market.  Having done direct mailings for numerous clients and have seen small businesses struggle to market their product through direct mail, Word Movers seized the opportunity and began marketing as a direct mail house targeting small to mid-volume mailings (up to 75,000 pieces).  Complete mailing services include targeted mailing lists, design, as well as database management.  Where applicable, Word Movers partners with complimentary business in order to give the customer the best service at the best price.  The mailroom is outfitted with equipment such as inserters, tabbing machines, automatic inkjet printers and professional mailing software.  Employees are knowledgeable with regard to postal rates and regulations, keeping current on rate increases and other changes involved in direct mailings.
